Israel’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 has become one of the biggest controversies surrounding this year’s competition, with several countries boycotting the event over the ongoing war in Gaza and criticism of the European Broadcasting Union’s decision to allow Israel to compete.
Countries including Spain, Ireland, Slovenia, Iceland and the Netherlands have either withdrawn from the contest or refused to participate competitively in protest against Israel’s inclusion. Critics argue the EBU has applied double standards by banning Russia following its invasion of Ukraine while allowing Israel to remain in the competition.
The controversy has also triggered protests from musicians, activists and former Eurovision participants. More than 1,000 artists and cultural figures reportedly signed open letters calling for Israel’s exclusion from the contest.
Israel is represented this year by singer Noam Bettan with the song «Michelle.» His performances have drawn demonstrations and political backlash during the competition in Vienna.
The EBU has defended its decision, saying Eurovision should remain a neutral cultural event despite growing political pressure surrounding the contest.
