Prosecutors have brought murder charges against a 44-year-old man in connection with the fatal stabbing of veteran Hollywood actor James Handy, Reuters reports. The 81-year-old star, known for a vast body of film and television work spanning half a century, was the partner of the suspect’s mother.
If convicted, Michael Gledhill faces a maximum sentence of 26 years in prison, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Gledhill was taken into custody on Wednesday after approaching police near the crime scene in the Tarzana neighbourhood to confess that he was the individual they were searching for.
A cryptic call and a tragic discovery
Authorities were initially dispatched to the scene following a deeply unsettling 911 emergency call. According to police reports, a man told the operator,
Upon arriving at the property where Gledhill lived with his mother, officers discovered Handy lying unconscious on the front lawn with a severe stab wound to his chest. Paramedics rushed the actor to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
While the Los Angeles Police Department has described the killing as an isolated incident, they have not yet disclosed a potential motive. Gledhill was scheduled to make his first court appearance on Friday, though it remains unclear whether he has secured legal representation.
A prolific Hollywood career
Throughout his extensive career, Handy established himself as a highly recognisable character actor. He frequently portrayed authority figures and law enforcement officials on television programmes dating back to the 1970s.
His big-screen portfolio featured memorable supporting roles in prominent films such as: Brighton Beach Memoirs, Arachnophobia, Jumanji, Unbreakable and Logan.
His final major cinematic appearance came in 2022 when he played Jimmy, an older bartender serving military fighter pilots in the Tom Cruise blockbuster hit Top Gun: Maverick.
A disturbing trend in Los Angeles
This devastating event marks the second high-profile fatal stabbing of a celebrity in Los Angeles within a six-month period.
In December, acclaimed actor-director Rob Reiner and his photographer-producer wife Michele Reiner were found murdered at their Brentwood mansion. Their younger son, Nick Reiner, was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection to their slayings.
