Having recently completed his acclaimed run on the hit series Andor, Diego Luna is swapping a galaxy far, far away for a magical kingdom. The Star Wars actor is the latest major name to join Disney’s live-action adaptation of Tangled.
First reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Luna will star alongside an ensemble cast that currently includes Teagan Croft, Milo Manheim and Kathryn Hahn.
The upcoming feature is a live-action reimagining of the 2010 animated blockbuster. Based on the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale of Rapunzel, the original film was a massive commercial success that grossed over $591 mln worldwide and inspired a spin-off television series.
A fresh character and creative team
While the core narrative of the long-haired princess remains the same, Luna will not be playing an established character from the animated original. Instead, he has been cast in an entirely new role crafted specifically for this live-action retelling.
Michael Gracey, best known for helming the smash-hit musical The Greatest Showman, is set to direct the film. The screenplay has been co-written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor.
Production is currently slated to begin in Spain this June. Kristin Burr is producing the feature through Burr! Productions while Jessica Virtue will oversee the project on behalf of Disney Live Action. An official theatrical release date has not yet been confirmed.
A packed production slate
The Tangled casting adds to a remarkably busy schedule for the acclaimed actor, director and producer. Beyond his success in the Star Wars franchise, Luna is highly regarded for his standout performances in Y Tu Mamá También and La Máquina.
Later this year, he will premiere his latest directorial effort at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival. The film, titled Ashes, was co-written by Luna and is adapted from a celebrated Spanish-language novel.
Furthermore, he is attached to star in the upcoming Netflix drama Mexico 86, which chronicles the true story of the government official who successfully negotiated Mexico’s bid to host the 1986 World Cup. Diego Luna has also recently wrapped production on the feature film Eleven Days and continues to run La Corriente del Golfo, the production company he co-founded with fellow actor Gael Garcia Bernal.
