Younger cinema-goers eager to see whether Odysseus finally reaches the shores of Ithaca will need to be accompanied by an adult this summer. Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated adaptation of Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, has been handed an R-rating by the Motion Picture Association.
While the exact reasons for the restrictive classification remain unconfirmed, it is highly likely that brutal battlefield clashes and visceral encounters with mythological beasts like the Cyclops have contributed to the decision. It is a rare move for a massive summer tentpole release. Studios generally prefer the safety of a PG-13 or PG certificate for action-heavy adventures to ensure they reach the widest possible demographic.
Defying box office traditions
Nolan has already proven that he can defy conventional box office logic. His previous summer release, Oppenheimer, also carried an R-rating and still managed to gross close to $1 bn worldwide. Prior to that historical drama, the acclaimed British director typically delivered PG-13 summer hits such as Inception, Dunkirk, Tenet and the Dark Knight trilogy.
Universal Pictures is handling the distribution of The Odyssey following their highly successful partnership with Nolan on Oppenheimer. The film is slated to hit cinemas on July 17, a lucrative mid-summer window that has historically served the filmmaker incredibly well.
A record-breaking budget
With a reported production budget of $250 mln, the cinematic voyage must attract vast audiences to turn a profit. This staggering figure makes it arguably the most expensive R-rated picture ever made, surpassing other high-cost adult-oriented films like Joker: Folie à Deux and Deadpool & Wolverine.
To help guarantee its financial success, the project boasts an exceptionally starry ensemble. The cast list features heavyweights such as Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Anne Hathaway.
Unprecedented ticket demand
Industry experts are already predicting that The Odyssey will completely dominate the summer season. Early indicators certainly support this theory. Tickets for exclusive IMAX 70mm screenings went on sale last year and were snapped up immediately.
Furthermore, general ticket sales launched on Thursday morning and generated such phenomenal online demand that buyers faced extensive virtual queues. It serves as a clear testament to Nolan’s enduring commercial appeal and the palpable public excitement to see how he follows up his recent Oscar triumph.
