The 2026 FIFA World Cup has begun on Canadian soil following a spectacular opening ceremony at BMO Field in Toronto on the night of June 12. The vibrant event served as the perfect prelude to the highly anticipated group stage match between the host nation and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Toronto celebration heavily embraced the rich cultural heritage of the host nation. Festivities commenced with a powerful Indigenous tribute featuring traditional dances performed by artists from the Mohawk tribe. Adding to the immense visual spectacle, giant figures representing iconic Canadian wildlife such as a whale, a moose and a polar bear were paraded across the sporting arena.

The musical lineup provided a star-studded soundtrack for the evening. Legendary artist Alanis Morissette opened the vocal performances by delivering a stirring rendition of the Canadian national anthem.
Homegrown talent then took centre stage as Canadian soul singer Alessia Cara and acclaimed R&B vocalist Jessie Reyez captivated the stadium crowd. The international spirit of the tournament was further highlighted by high-energy performances from Canadian entertainer Nora Fatehi, French rapper Vegedream and rising star Elyanna.

A tournament of firsts
This year’s competition is already breaking historic records by introducing a brand-new format that significantly expands the global reach of the sport.
For the very first time in the history of the tournament, 48 national teams will compete for the ultimate footballing prize instead of the traditional 32. Furthermore, the global championship is uniquely being co-hosted by three separate nations comprising the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The U.S. opening ceremony took place on June 13 at 04:40 (GMT+5).
