World Cup broadcasters have defended their decision to limit coverage of Ismael Kone‘s horrific leg injury during Canada’s 6-0 victory over Qatar, saying the move was made out of respect for viewers and the player.

Kone suffered a broken leg following a challenge from Qatar midfielder Assim Madibo during the Group B match. The incident left players visibly shaken and prompted medical staff to rush onto the pitch before the Canadian international was stretchered off for treatment.

Several broadcasters chose not to show replays of the challenge. ITV reportedly avoided replaying the incident during its live coverage, while the BBC later edited its highlights package after stadium microphones captured the sound of the injury. The broadcaster said it removed the audio due to the sensitive nature of the incident and did not show close-up footage or replays of the tackle.

In a statement, the BBC said it had taken «all the appropriate measures» and wished Koné a speedy recovery. Canada head coach Jesse Marsch later revealed that the severity of the injury was immediately apparent to those on the bench, describing the moment as deeply distressing for the team.

Despite Canada’s historic victory, the injury overshadowed the result and is expected to rule Kone out for several months, dealing a significant blow to the co-host nation’s World Cup campaign.
