The American entertainment industry has lost a familiar face. Hal Williams, the seasoned actor who anchored beloved network comedies during the 1970s and 1980s, has passed away at the age of 91. Representatives for the television star confirmed his death.
Audiences widely recognise Williams for his central role on the NBC hit «227». Over the course of 116 episodes broadcast between 1985 and 1990, he portrayed Lester Jenkins. His character served as the patriarch of a family living in a bustling apartment complex alongside his on-screen wife Mary, played by Marla Gibbs, and their daughter Brenda, portrayed by Regina King.
The acclaimed five-season programme also featured notable performances from Curtis Baldwin, Helen Martin, Alaina Reed-Hall and Jackée Harry, who secured a supporting actress Emmy in 1987 for her contributions to the project.
Creating a classic comedic duo
Earlier in his career, the prolific entertainer made a lasting mark on «Sanford and Son». Across a 22-episode run, he stepped into the shoes of Officer «Smitty» Smith. The policeman was famously paired with Howard Platt’s character, Officer «Hoppy» Hopkins. The law enforcement duo became famous for a specific comedic routine. Hopkins would frequently overcomplicate basic situations by using dense institutional vocabulary, forcing Smith to break down the convoluted reports into everyday language.
Speaking to the WKYC news station recently, the late actor shared how this iconic dynamic originated. He recalled that the translation joke emerged organically during early script read-throughs and instantly won over the creative team. The running gag proved so successful that writers sometimes relied on the actors to generate their own material. Whenever the daily script lacked substance, producers would instruct the duo to take a two-hour break and invent a new comedic exchange.
The star’s extensive small-screen resume spanned several decades. He secured parts in numerous popular broadcasts including «The Waltons», «On the Rocks», «The Sinbad Show» and «Private Benjamin». His final television appearance occurred in the recently launched CBS reimagining of «Matlock». Furthermore, the 91-year-old built a solid cinematic portfolio with supporting turns in major motion pictures such as «Flight», «Guess Who», «Hardcore», «The Rookie» and «Percy & Thunder».
