Following a closed-door screening for CinemaCon attendees this past April, Disney has distributed the initial theatrical preview for «Avengers: Doomsday». The upcoming blockbuster acts as the climax to the overarching multiverse storyline built by Marvel Studios over the previous seven years.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the crossover event gathers almost every prominent figure from the expansive film franchise to tackle an unprecedented threat. Robert Downey Jr. makes his franchise comeback, swapping his legendary Iron Man identity to play the primary antagonist, Doctor Doom.
While exact details surrounding his character are still under wraps, fans speculate the masked villain could be an alternate-reality version of Tony Stark. The antagonist briefly showed up with his face hidden during the end-credits sequence of «Fantastic Four: First Steps».
Heroes assemble across universes
The fresh footage displays the core Avengers preparing for Doom’s impending cross-dimensional war. During a standout sequence, Thor engages the villain in combat before crossing paths again with Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans. The actor makes his long-awaited return following his departure in «Avengers: Endgame», which remains the second most financially successful movie globally.
The promotional material also verifies that older «X-Men» figures from the Fox era are crossing into the primary Avengers timeline. Patrick Stewart playing Professor Xavier, Ian McKellen portraying Magneto and Rebecca Romijn as Mystique appear together with Cyclops (James Marsden) and Gambit (Channing Tatum).
Recent franchise additions are set to be pivotal to the approaching battle. Both the Thunderbolts and the Fantastic Four feature heavily in the preview, verifying appearances from Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Florence Pugh and David Harbour.
Further returning cast members feature Paul Rudd, Tom Hiddleston, Letitia Wright, Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie. This massive ensemble was initially teased during a promotional stunt in March 2025, which displayed actor names stencilled onto set chairs.
To build anticipation before the release, Disney previously attached four unique teaser clips to theatrical screenings of «Avatar: Fire and Ash». These brief videos provided sneak peeks at Rogers alongside Thor’s adoptive child Love and showed Wakandan fighters meeting The Thing.
«Avengers: Doomsday» hits cinemas on December 18, preceding the sequel «Avengers: Secret Wars» by exactly one year.
