Apple HomePod mini 2: new features, Siri AI limits and buying guide

Apple’s HomePod mini 2 costs $149 and introduces AI-powered Siri, music-reactive lighting and four-speaker surround sound. However, its headline Siri AI feature will not be available when the speaker goes on sale on October 30.
The second-generation smart speaker uses Apple’s S10 chip, which processes audio in real time to optimise volume, dynamic range and sound quality. It retains the compact spherical design of the original HomePod mini but introduces five colour options: pink, green, blue, white and midnight.
Pre-orders opened on October 13 in more than 24 countries and regions, including the US and UK.
How to use HomePod mini 2’s new features
Siri AI and personalised requests
The upgraded Siri will support more natural conversations, answer questions using information from the web and find songs based on descriptions.
It will also recognise up to six household members by voice and handle personalised requests, such as finding a recipe mentioned in an email or creating a reminder based on a message.
To use personal context features, the household owner must have an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone or iPad with the latest software and Siri AI enabled.
Apple says Siri AI will arrive through a free software update but has not announced when.
Sound Glow lighting
Introducing Sound Glow With Sound Glow, the top of HomePod mini transforms into a visual canvas that glows and pulses in sync with the music, reacting in real time to bass and treble. The song’s album artwork from Now Playing generates a color-matched light experience that’s unique to every song, and users can pick a soundscape like rain to trigger bespoke animations for a soothing atmosphere.

The speaker’s illuminated top now responds to music, changing colours to match album artwork and pulsing with bass and treble.
Sound Glow also supports ambient soundscapes, including rain, with accompanying lighting effects.
Four-speaker surround sound
Users can connect four HomePod mini 2 speakers to the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K to create a surround sound system.
The devices automatically detect their positions and adjust audio timing and volume to match the room.
The feature requires the new Apple TV 4K and compatible HomePod speakers.

HomePod mini 2 can also serve as the default audio output for compatible Macs with Wi-Fi 6E or newer.
Users can connect a single speaker or configure two units for stereo sound, including for films, games and FaceTime calls.
Smart home controls and alerts
The speaker works as an Apple Home hub, allowing users to control compatible lights, locks, thermostats and other accessories remotely.
It can also recognise the sound of smoke or carbon monoxide alarms and send notifications to connected Apple devices.

The new HomePod mini costs $149 in the US and £149 in the UK, compared with the original model’s launch price of $99.
Before ordering, buyers should consider several limitations:
- Siri AI availability: The new assistant will arrive later and initially support English in eight countries, including the US, UK, Australia and India.
- Compatible devices: Personalised AI requests require an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad.
- Home cinema setup: Four-speaker surround sound requires the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K.
- Mac compatibility: Default speaker support requires a Mac equipped with Wi-Fi 6E or later.
For existing HomePod mini owners, the biggest upgrades are the S10 processor, Sound Glow, expanded audio configurations and future Siri AI support. However, anyone purchasing the device primarily for its new AI capabilities will need to wait for Apple’s software update.
