A new trailer for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 has introduced a young protagonist armed with a video camera rather than cybernetic weapons, offering a closer look at the anime’s new characters ahead of its Netflix premiere on 20 October.
The footage debuted during IGN Fall Fan Fest on 14 October, alongside an interview with the creators about their decision to centre the story on a child and take the series in a darker direction.
Unlike the original anime, which followed David Martinez and his relationship with netrunner Lucy, the sequel introduces Roman Carax, a young boy fascinated by old-fashioned filmmaking, and Talia Yang, a member of the cybernetically enhanced Maelstrom gang.
The trailer shows Roman documenting events around him with a handheld camera as he becomes entangled in the dangerous world of Night City’s mercenaries.
The footage also suggests that Talia will play a significant role in his story, with several scenes hinting at a complicated relationship between the two.
Why the new Cyberpunk story follows a child
The decision to introduce a younger protagonist marks a departure from the original series, which explored Night City’s criminal underworld through a teenager gradually drawn into mercenary work.
Roman’s interest in filmmaking also offers a different perspective on the city. Rather than simply participating in its conflicts, he appears determined to record what happens around him.

The trailer places particular emphasis on the characters’ psychological struggles, while suggesting that cybernetic modifications and their consequences will remain central to the plot.
The sequel is a standalone story, meaning viewers will not need to follow David and Lucy’s adventures to understand its main events.
CD Projekt Red previously described the new season as a story about revenge and redemption, featuring a completely different group of characters whose lives become intertwined in Night City.
Creators draw on horror cinema for the sequel
In an interview with IGN, showrunner Bartosz Sztybor discussed the influence of horror filmmakers David Cronenberg, Takashi Miike and Julia Ducournau, as well as the New French Extremity movement.
Sztybor said the team wanted to explore different approaches to depicting violence, from exaggerated action to colder, more unsettling scenes. The creators also discussed their efforts to avoid repeating the original series while retaining its central themes.
The sequel is directed by Kai Ikarashi, who previously worked on the sixth episode of the original anime. Japanese animation studio Trigger has returned to produce the series alongside CD Projekt Red.
The 10-episode season will also introduce several other characters, including former mercenary Weak Kingsley and a nomad known as D, whose pursuit of revenge leads him towards a corporate secret.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 premieres exclusively on Netflix on 20 October 2026, more than four years after the original series debuted in September 2022.
