Ancient Myth Meets IMAX: Nolan Unveils New Look at "The Odyssey"

Ancient Greece is finally getting the ultimate blockbuster treatment. Universal has pulled back the curtain on Christopher Nolan’s wildly ambitious new project, The Odyssey, dropping a new trailer during Monday night’s broadcast of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

Marking the director’s 13th feature film, the Homeric adaptation promises a staggering blend of classical storytelling and cutting-edge technical wizardry. Uniquely, Nolan has shot the entire sweeping narrative using only IMAX cameras, an unprecedented first for the film industry.

Monsters, mutiny and a massive cast

The teaser footage immediately plunges viewers into the brutal and magical world of antiquity. Front and centre is Matt Damon as the embattled warrior-king Odysseus, shown in a desperate, visceral clash with a towering Cyclops. Back on the shores of Ithaca, the trailer gives us a glimpse of a sinister Robert Pattinson. Playing the villainous suitor Antinous, Pattinson is seen violently scheming to usurp the missing king’s throne.

To populate this sprawling mythological landscape, Nolan and his long-time producing partner Emma Thomas have assembled one of the most formidable casts in recent memory. The core ensemble includes Anne Hathaway as the famously patient Queen Penelope, Tom Holland as Telemachus, Zendaya as the wisdom-wielding goddess Athena and Charlize Theron as the powerful sorceress Circe.

The sheer volume of A-list talent attached to the Syncopy production is staggering. Beyond the principal characters, the epic features Lupita Nyong’o, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Will Yun Lee, Mia Goth, Jimmy Gonzales, Elliot Page and Jovan Adepo in various supporting roles.

A new summer box office showdown?

The Odyssey has massive shoes to fill. Nolan’s previous cinematic outing was 2023’s Oppenheimer, a historical juggernaut that not only dominated the cultural conversation but also raked in nearly $1 bn globally. That film ultimately swept the Academy Awards with seven wins including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy and Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr.

Universal is clearly confident in their newest epic, having released advance tickets for exclusive 70mm screenings in July 2025, a full year before the film’s official premiere.

When the film does arrive in cinemas on July 17, it will spark a fascinating box office battle. Echoing the viral «Barbenheimer» clash of 2023, Nolan’s ancient war epic will debut on the exact same day as Disney and Sony’s highly anticipated superhero sequel Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
